Lyons Defeat Simmons College 2-1

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College field hockey team overcame a one goal deficit to defeat visiting Simmons College 2-1 Tuesday night at Diane C. Nordin '80 field.

Wheaton controlled most every aspect of the contest statistically, outshooting the Sharks 28-6, while holding a 15-3 advantage in corners.

Despite a 15-5 shot advantage for the Lyons in the first half, it was the Sharks (4-3) who scored the periods only goal. The goal came on a successful penalty stroke by Olivia Trull.

Like in the first half, the Lyons came out strong and this time were rewarded for their efforts with back-to-back goals. A goal by junior Katie Peters pulled the Lyons even in the 46th minute. The goal came following a shot by Amelia Gage that was pushed around the box, eventually making its way to Peters.

Less than a minute later Gage tacked on what proved to be the game-winning goal. The insurance goal started with a take-away by the Lyons at midfield and a cleaver run down the center of the field by Hailey Kohler who threaded the ball perfectly to Gage. Gage, who was parked in front of the Simmons keeper and a defender, wasted no time turning and firing the ball into the goal.

Simmons was able to make one last attempt at goal in the final minute and a half of action, but came up short due to all-out defensive effort by Wheaton.

Wheaton returns to the turf on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Smith College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.
