BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) had three goals and senior Heather Raniolo(Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored twice and added three assists to help third-seeded Springfield College defeat second-seeded Wheaton College, 9-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the win, Springfield (13-5) will make its eighth conference title game appearance in the last nine years, while Wheaton sees its season come to an end at 9-9.
Senior MK Jaeger (Plymouth, Mass.) finished with two goals, while senior Bianca Raniolo (Ossining, N.Y.) and sophomore Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each contributed two assists for the Pride. First-year Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) chipped in with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sophomore Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) scored three goals to lead the Lyons. Junior Giovanna Bishop (Portland, Ore.) added two assists, while senior Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt.) finished with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Wheaton took a 2-1 lead on Peters' second goal of the first half just under nine minutes into the contest, but Springfield responded with a four-goal run to take the lead for good. Heather Raniolo scored twice and set up Jaeger's tally just 30 seconds before the half to make it 5-2. The Lyons won the ensuing draw and Peters completed her hat trick 20 seconds later to get within two at the break.
Corsano scored twice early in the second half as the Pride pushed its lead to 7-3 with 22:48 remaining in the game. Senior Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) cut the deficit to three with a transition tally less than two minutes later, but the Lyons' next five possessions ended with turnovers and Jaeger notched her second goal of the day to help Springfield regain a four-goal advantage with 13:49 left.
Senior Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) capped the scoring with 5:50 left, and Pride junior goalkeeper Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) made two of her three saves over the final four minutes to seal the win.
Sophomore Molly Whiten (Bethesda, Md.) stopped six shots for Wheaton, which was outshot 24-12 on the day.
Springfield finished with a 21-20 edge in ground balls, a 9-6 advantage in draw controls and converted 21-of-24 clear chances.
The Lyons, who committed 26 turnovers, were successful on 17-of-24 clearing opportunities.
The Pride will now face top-seeded Babson in Sunday's NEWMAC championship game at 1 p.m. at MacDowell Field.
