Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Pushing through ten goals in the second half, the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team earned its third straight win on Wednesday against the Mount Holyoke College Lyons, tallying the 16-7 victory at MHC Turf Field.
The Lyons advance to 6-5 on the season after the win and extend the perfect 3-0 record in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while Mount Holyoke falls to 1-7 overall (0-3 NEWMAC).
Wheaton kicked off the first half with three unanswered goals from junior Angela Mallis, senior Jenna Tewksbury and senior Madison Cohen. Mount Holyoke responded with their first goal at 19:58, but that wouldn't be enough as sophomore Katie Peters would net her own goal and Tewksbury would tally two more to seal up a hat trick before the half was over.
In the second half, Wheaton's offense continued to explode as senior Brooke Sabol began the five-goal run to give the Lyons the 11-3 advantage.
Wheaton would get one back on the free position later after a goal from Mount Holyoke, but Charlotte Wagner struck again for MHC, this time off a pass inside the circle from Haley Subocz to make it 12-5 with 15:21 remaining.
Sabol led a Wheaton charge with four tallies and two assists. She also added a game-best nine shots with four ground balls, a game-high five draw control wins and a caused turnover. Tewksbury added three goals and two assists in addition to a game-high five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Cohen and Giovanna Bishop each had two tallies.
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Witten tallied one save in the 60 minutes played to move to 6-5 overall.
For the game, Wheaton owned a 38-9 shot advantage, also owning a 27-16 margin in ground balls.
Wheaton travels to Babson College (6-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday to continue NEWMAC action with game time set to begin at 2 p.m.
