Sabol and Cohen Notch Hat-Tricks in Season Opener for Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass.— The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season in style, leading from cover to cover, defeating Gordon 18-5 in the season opener for both schools.

The Lyons Brooke Sabol and Madison Cohen notched hat-tricks on the day, while Gordon's Olivia McCarrick and Bailey Grinnell had two goals apiece. Allie Bush finished with two goals and a game-high two assists for Wheaton.

The Lyons dominated possession in the first half, putting 16 shots on goal and 26 in total. Pressuring the Gordon defense off of draw controls to work for the Blue and White, as they managed to sneak through the heart of the Scot defense on more than one occasion in the opening half.

Wheaton scored the first six goals of the game, all of them in a seven-minute span between the sixth minute and 13 minute of the contest. Cohen tallied the season-opening goal in the sixth minute and scored once more during the Lyons six-goal streak. The Lyons also saw goals from Katie Peters, Maddy Lahm, Katherine Kowal and Megan Hemmerlein.

Trailing 6-0, Jessie Castelline got the Scots on the board in the 14th minute with an unassisted strike.

Wheaton went on another extended run that lasted three minutes, scoring four times during that span. Kowal began the scoring frenzy, finding net with 13:50 to go in the half. The goal was followed by goals from Sabol, Jenna Tewksbury, Peters and Angela Mallis.

Gordon rookie McCarrick made it an 11-2 game with her first collegiate goal, but the Lyons took a 12-2 lead into the break after another Mallis goal.

The second half played more even as the Scots settled down in their defensive half, but the Lyons scored the first three goals of the final period and never looked back. Amy Livermore netted the first goal of the second period, which was swiftly followed up by two more goals by Sabol.

Grinnell scored back-to-back goals in the 39th and 41st minutes, while McCarrick added her second with just over seven minutes to go in regulation.

Molly Witten earned the win for the Lyons after 30 minutes in goal that saw her come up with three saves on five shots faced. Galicia Rothe also saw time in net for Wheaton, playing the other 30 minutes and also coming up with three saves.

The Lyons have a week off before returning to action for a 1 p.m. game at Endicott on Saturday, March 5.
