Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior Sophia Black knocked down a career-high 19 points Wednesday night in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at MIT. The Engineers defeated the Lyons 63-51.
Black ended the night 7-of-16 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. The senior also pulled down five rebounds, while dishing out three assists and coming up with a steal. Ruthie Zientek, Jill Bodreau, Oppie Morris and Natalie Wind all finished the game with seven points. Zientek led the Lyons with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Morris and Sara McLeman finished with a block each.
Kara Holinski finished with a game-high 21 points for the Engineers (6-1; 3-0 NEWMAC), while teammate Dolly Yuan contributed 12 points.
The opening quarter was a defensive battle that saw MIT emerge with an 11-6 lead. The Engineers maintained their small cushion as a jumper by Yuan moved the score to 16-10 at the 6:12 mark of the second quarter. Wheaton replied with six straight points to tie the game with 2:28 left. Following an exchange of baskets, MIT generated a 7-3 spurt to enter the intermission with a 25-21 lead.
The hosts carried the momentum into the third frame as their advantage grew to 15 (39-24) with 4:13 on the clock. Despite the deficit the Lyons continued to attack, coming within nine points twice during the fourth quarter, the last at 47-38 on McLeman's layup with 6:27 to go. The Engineers responded with an 11-5 run during the next three minutes that put the game out of reach.
Wheaton (1-5; 0-3 NEWMAC) returns to the court on Friday, Dec. 9 at Newbury for a 6 p.m. contest.
