Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over Wellesley

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's soccer team scored two first-half goals to defeat visiting Wellesley College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Christina Mirrione '99 Stadium.

Wheaton wasted no time getting the scoring started with junior captain Megan Healy netting her team-leading ninth goal in the 10th minute. Senior forward Alexa Sanchez created the opportunity after dribble out of traffic and sending a pass to Healy. Healy, who was posted about 25-yards out, collected the pass and calmly lifted it over Wellesley's Olivia Reckley.

Junior Caren McCarthy scored the Lyons ensurance goal in the 26th minute with a long range shot that pinged off the far post. The goal is McCarthy's second of the year.

The Blue (4-5; 1-1 NEWMAC) put the pressure on the Lyons in the second half, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Leann Wolf to make three saves in the period. Wolf ended the contest with five saves, while Reckley also finished with five for Wellesley.

Wellesley's best chances at scoring came in the 64th and 67th minutes with Melise Knowles and Julia Jung firing off back-to-back shots.

The Lyons (9-2; 1-1 NEWMAC) return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. against MIT at Mirrione Stadium.
