Wheaton's only lead of the game came at the 9:08 mark in the first quarter when Arnone drained a three-pointer to make it a 3-2 contest. Smith quickly responded, capturing a seven point, 18-11, lead with 3:57 to go courtesy of a Bondi three. Trailing 25-20 heading into the second quarter, the Lyons opened on a 5-1 run that brought them within a point of the Pioneers. Smith once again had an answer, running up a nine point advantage over the next six minutes with the help of eight points from Guest-Pritch and five from Marquez.

Smith continued to push the pace of play in the third quarter, going on to earn its largest lead at the 6:33 mark on a Guest-Pritch three-pointer, making it a 49-36 contest. Despite trailing by double-digits the Lyons were not out of the contest. It took nearly three minutes for either team to get on the board in the fourth quarter with Meghan Holland breaking the scoring drought at the 7:47 mark with a made free-throw for the Pioneers. Wheaton responded just seconds later with a layup by Shoemaker that sparked a 15-5 run for the Lyons, pulling them within a point with 2:57 left to play.

The final 2:57 was a tough back and forth battle with each side matching each other basket for basket. Despite all of their comeback efforts the Lyons would never find a way to take control of the scoreboard.

The Lyons also hosted the Heller's Angels during the contest. Heller's Angels provides year-round sports training, athletic competition and other health-related programming for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 2003, Heller's Angels began with seven athletes competing in track and field events. The team has since expanded to include over 100 athletes competing in seven sports over four seasons.

Wheaton's relationship with the Heller's Angels has spanned more than seven years. The team sold t-shirts the last three days, while also hosting a raffle and Heller's Angels game during halftime of the contest.

Wheaton returns to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at home against Wellesley for a 7 p.m. NEWMAC contest.
