SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Mount Holyoke College. Mount Holyoke defeated Wheaton 9-0.
The Lyons fall to 0-2 on the season, while MHC improves to 2-0 overall.
The duo of Amanda Brazell and Izzy Gorham put up a fight against Margaux Holloschutz and Ayame Yazawa in No. 1 doubles, but were unable to hold off the host Lyons, falling 9-7.
Similarly, sophomore Arielle Klopsis and first-year Francisca Secor battled strong in doubles, taking on Amy Chen and Madison Rosen in the No. 3 spot. The Wheaton pair did their best but were unable to overcome their hosts, falling 8-5.
Wheaton's best chance at a point in singles came from Brazell in the No. 1 flight, where she went head-to-head with Yazawa. Yazawa picked up a 6-3 win in the opening set, before Brazell forced a tie-breaker in the second. With the score tied at 6-6, Yazawa mustered up enough energy to defeat Brazell 7-4 to take the set 7-6.
