NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis defeated Smith College 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at Clark Tennis Courts in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The win is third in a row for the Lyons.
With the win the Lyons improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Smith falls to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in NEWMAC action.
Wheaton swept doubles play, starting with an 8-4 win by Izzy Gorham and Amanda Brazell in the No. 1 position. In No. 2 doubles, the Lyons pair of Stassy Furber and Caroline Stanclift took down Noa Dubin and Janan Fugal 8-5. Wheaton's final point came from Connor O'Keefe and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley, who defeated Annina Van Riper and Morgan Barney 8-3.
The Lyons clinched the match shortly after doubles, starting with a win by Furber at No. 4 singles. Furber defeated Fugel 6-2, 6-0, putting Wheaton up 4-0. The match belong to the Lyons after Brazell won her match against Dubin. The senior dropped the first set 6-2, before winning the final two 6-0, 6-1.
Wheaton's final point came in No. 6 doubles when O'Keefe took down Kim Joanna 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
DiNoicola-Fawley battled Margaret Anne Smith in No. 3 singles, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-10, while Stanclift fell 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 at No. 5 singles.
Wheaton returns to the court on Sept. 25 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament.
