CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team defeated Simmons College 9-0 at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lyons improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 1-4.
Senior Izzy Gorham and junior Amanda Brazell combined at No. 1 doubles to hand the Simmons pair of Theresa Reinhard and Meg Cokely their first loss of the season with an 8-5 decision.
The Lyons' duo of Stassy Furber and Caroline Stanclift picked up an 8-5 victory over the Sharks No. 2 doubles team. Wheaton also recorded a victory at No. 3 doubles, courtesy of an 8-4 effort put together by Caroline DiNicola-Fawley and Connor O'Keefe over Simmons Katie Crowley and Mary Matthews.
In singles, Brazell won in straight sets for the Lyons, 6-4, 6-3, as the Lyons No. 1, while Gorham bested Downey, 7-5, 6-1, in the No. 2 position for Wheaton.
DiNicola-Fawley posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory for the Lyons over Chen at No. 3 singles and Wheaton's Furber trumped Matthews at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
Stanclift defeated Sharks' Winnie in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 6 singles went to O'Keefe as she dropped just one game to Simmons first year Laura Plaza in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. when they host Smith College.
