SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating host Springfield College 6-3.
Wheaton started off strong, earning two of the three doubles points, starting with a dominating 8-2 win from Izzy Gorham and Amanda Brazell. Connor O'Keefe and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley picked up the other doubles point for the Lyons, taking down Melanie Thulin and Ariana Shemms 8-6 in the No. 3 position.
Caroline Stanclift and Stassy Furber fought for every point in the No. 2 doubles flight, but were unable to hold off Melissa Parish and Rachel Litchfield, falling 8-6.
Brazell put the Lyons ahead 3-1 after defeating London in the No. 1 singles flight, winning 6-0, 6-1. Wheaton continued to pull away from Springfield with DeNicola-Fawley earning the next point for the Lyons, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Parrish in the No. 3 spot.
Emily Etter earned a point back for Springfield, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Furber. Springfield pulled within a point with a victory in the No. 5 singles flight by Rachel Litchfield.
Gorham won the match for the Lyons moments later with a thrilling three set victory over Foster. The sophomore won the opening set 6-1, before falling 4-6 in the second. With the match on the line, Gorham dug deep to pull out a 6-3 win in the third set.
O'Keefe won her set in the No. 6 spot, taking down Thulin 7-6 (3), 6-3.
The Lyons return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Simmons for a 3:30 p.m. match.
