Lyons to play Babson in NEWMAC Tournament this Saturday at home

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College sophomore Niki Sharkin (Summit, N.J./Summit) scored the game-winning goal with 15 seconds left in regulation to lift the Blue to an 8-7 conference victory over Wheaton College on Wednesday evening.

Lyons' junior Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) paced the offense with two markers and one assist for three points. Tewksbury also added three draw controls and one ground ball to her stat line in the loss.

Senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway), and juniors Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy), Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) all scored solo tallies to round out the scoring for Wheaton.

Wellesley first-year Jenny Gubner (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) recorded a game-high four points on two goals and two assists, while Sharkin, and sophomores Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and Mary Lemay (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) all scored two goals apiece. Senior Claire Canty (East Rockaway, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) added two assists to the Blue's attack as well.

Trailing 7-3 with 18:19 to play, the Lyons stormed back with four unanswered goals over a span of 10:12 to even the score at 7-7.

Peters started the rally with an unassisted strike at 14:44, while Sabol buried a free position shot 33 seconds later to make it 7-5. Bush finished her 22nd goal of the season off a feed by Tewksbury to cut the deficit to one goal (7-6) at 11:36 and Jenquine potted a free position shot at the 8:07 mark for her 13th goal of the season to tie up the contest.

Wheaton went on to control play for the next 6:58 of action by causing one turnover and recording three shots. The Lyons first shot attempt at 5:49 hit the post, while Wellesley sophomore goalkeeper Wendy Nettleton (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) made her tenth and final save of the evening with 2:24 left to play.

The Blue and White's final scoring opportunity sailed wide at 1:09 before Gubner set up Sharkin with game-winning tally with 15 seconds remaining in the matchup.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made four saves in the loss (9-6). Nettleton, who matched her season-high in saves, improved to 8-4 overall in goal for the Blue.

Wellesley held a slight 13-12 advantage in ground balls. The Lyons outshot the hosts, 23-16, and won the draw control battle, 9-8. Wheaton also went 5-for-9 on its clear attempts and 2-for-6 on free position attempts.

Wheaton (9-7, 5-3 NEWMAC) will host Babson College in the NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinals this Saturday at 1 p.m. Wellesley (8-4, 5-3 NEWMAC) will host Mount Holyoke College on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament, as well, at 1 p.m.
