Bush becomes all-time career assists leader

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Juniors Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) combined for 14 points to guide the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a 19-1 triumph over Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Sabol potted a game-high five goals to go along with one assist and Bush compiled a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists for the Lyons. With her four assists in today's win, Bush surpassed Hailey Colburn '12 on the all-time career assists list. Bush, who now has 88 career assists, needed just one helper to tie Colburn's program record mark and another to pass it. 

Classmate Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) registered a hat-trick and one assist to finish with four points, while senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and junior Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) added two goals each.

Senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), junior Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) and first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) all tallied solo strikes to round out the scoring for Wheaton.

Senior midfielder Holly Moore (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored the Bears' lone goal at the 26:08 mark of the first half to break up a string of four-straight goals by the Lyons.

Wheaton went on to outscore Coast Guard Academy by an 8-1 margin to end the half with a 12-1 advantage. In the second stanza, Cohen highlighted the Lyons' efforts with two goals as the Blue and White posted a 7-0 differential on the scoreboard in the half for the eventual 19-1 score.

Defensively, Sabol gathered a team-high eight ground balls, caused three turnovers and won three draw controls, while Sharick contributed four ground balls and three draw controls to the victory.

Wheaton outshot the hosts, 34-6, scooped up 22 ground balls and went 16-for-19 in clears. The Bears were 13-for-23 in transition and won the draw controls matchup, 12-9.

The Lyons (6-4, 2-0 NEWMAC), who are now 5-0 when scoring first in a contest, host Mount Holyoke College in conference play next Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Nordin Field. Coast Guard Academy (3-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) travels to Springfield College next Wednesday for a NEWMAC matchup slated to begin at 7 p.m.
