Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Smith, 17-6, In NEWMAC Opener

Sabol and Peters combine for eight goals

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team cruised past Smith College, 17-6, in both team's first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup of the year on Wednesday evening at Nordin Field.

Wheaton junior Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) registered a season-high five goals, while first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) tallied a season-high three markers. Senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and junior Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) both chipped in with two goals apiece.

Senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), juniors Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and first-year Megan Hemmerlein (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) all recorded single goals to aid the offense. Bush and classmate Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) both handed out two assists, while Sabol and Jenquine each had solo helpers.

Smith senior Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) and junior Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) both potted a pair of goals for the Pioneers, while first-year Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends School) and classmate Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) each had one goal apiece. Myran had two helpers, while Bester and sophomore Quinn Lavigne (Portland, Maine/Portland) both tallied one assist each.

The Blue and White scored the game's first four goals over the opening 3:27 of the contest. Sabol got the scoring started for the Lyons with back-to-back goals, while Cohen scored just 17-seconds later at the 28:13 mark. Jenquine then found the back of the cage on a free position attempt at 26:33 to complete the run. So far this season, the Lyons are 4-0 when scoring first in a contest.

Smith got on the scoreboard (4-1) when Hamilton scored on a feed from Bester at the 25:48 mark. Wheaton then went on to close out the first stanza with eight-straight goals, which made the score 12-1 at the break. Both teams traded goals in the second half as each team registered five goals over the closing 30-minutes of action for the final score of 17-6.

All three Wheaton goalkeepers got into the same contest for the second time this season, in as many games, for the Lyons. Wheaton senior netminder Katie Ananain (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) improved her record to 5-3 with four saves in the first half. First-year Molly Witten (Bethesda, Md./Dublin School) made one save through the first 23:31 of the second stanza, while classmate Galicia Rothe (Key Biscayne, Fla./Palmer Trinity School) played the remaining 6:29 of the contest. Smith first-year goalkeeper Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) stopped 14 shots for the Pioneers.

Defensively, Wheaton junior Mia Cambi (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and senior Kelsey O'Brien (Reading, Vt./Westminster School) paced the Lyons with four ground balls apiece. Cambi and Sabol also caused three turnovers, while Sharick and Jenquine each controlled four draws for the Blue and White.

Both teams return to action this Saturday, March 28 at 12 p.m. Wheaton (5-4, 1-0 NEWMAC) travels to Coast Guard, while Smith (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) welcomes Emerson to its campus.
