Wheaton Completes Comeback Win Against Roger Williams, 11-8

Box Score

Allie Bush leads the way with six points

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated Roger Williams University, 11-8, in comeback fashion on Wednesday evening at Bayside Field as the Lyons outscored the Hawks by a 7-1 margin in the second half en route to their non-conference victory.

Wheaton junior Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) registered a season-high three goals and three assists to lead the Lyons in the comeback victory. Classmates Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) potted two goals apiece, while juniors Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Ava Myette (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro), senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) all tallied solo markers this afternoon.

Roger Williams received a hat trick from senior Deven Machette (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), a pair of goals via first-year Kaelin Hogan (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) and single markers from sophomore McKenna Everding (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and senior Samantha Davenport (Bethel, Conn./Bethel)

The Hawks scored the game's first four goals over a 12:23 span to open stanza, before senior Kelsie Jenquine (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) found Myette for a tally to put the Lyons on the board, 4-1, at 13:41. Wheaton potted its second goal just 3:32 later when sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) fed the ball to Sabol with 9:08 to play in the first half to cut their deficit in half, 4-2. Machette and Everding extended Roger Williams' lead back to four goals as the dup answered the spurt with markers just 24-seconds apart, at 6:30 and 6:16, respectively.

Wheaton's next two goals also came under a minute apart (59-seconds) as both Bush and Tewksbury found the back of the cage on unassisted tallies to pulled the Blue and White within two goals, once again, at 6-4. Roger Williams added its seventh goal of the game moments later when Hogan drove into the eight-meter arc to make the margin 7-4 at the break.

The Blue and White began the second stanza with four unanswered goals, just as Roger Williams did to open the contest. Bush recorded her three helpers over the run, while senior goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) registered her seventh career assist on Bush's goal at 18:53. Cohen capped the spurt with a tally on the man-advantage midway through the stanza and gave Wheaton its first lead of the contest, 8-7.

Machette scored her third goal of the game and evened the score at 8-8 with 11:40 to play. Peters then answered 1:40 later with an unassisted goal as Wheaton took the lead for the second time at 9-8. Tewksbury's free position goal and Bush's marker from Sabol at with 6:05 remaining put the game out of reach as the Blue and White held on for the eventual 11-8 road victory.

Ananian made a season-high nine saves and improved to 3-3 this spring for the Blue and White, while in the other crease, sophomore Kimberly Bolk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made nine saves in the loss (2-3).

Defensively, Cohen paced the Lyons with a game-high four ground balls, while Ananian, Sharick and junior Mia Cambi (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) each scooped up three ground balls. The trio of Tewksbury, Sharick and Sabol controlled the ball after the draw three times apiece, which led to Wheaton holding a 12-9 advantage in draw controls. The Blue and White also went 14-for-18 in transition.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. Wheaton (3-4) hosts Bridgewater State University in a non-conference tilt on Nordin Field, while Roger Williams (2-3) welcomes Curry College to its campus for its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener.
