Endicott Edges Women's Lacrosse In Double Overtime, 12-11

Sabol registers team-leading 14th goal in the loss

NORTON, Mass. – A free position goal from Endicott sophomore Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) with 31-seconds to play in the second overtime frame gave the Gulls a 12-11 road victory over the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

Wheaton was paced by sophomore Angela Mallis (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), junior Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy), classmate Madison Cohen (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and first-year Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) who each netted a pair of goals. Senior Melanie Sharick (Amherst, N.H./Amherst), junior Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) and classmate Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) each chipped in with solo markers this afternoon.
 
Whitney led the Gulls with four goals, while classmate Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass./Canton), senior Kirsten Thor (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and classmate Ellie Clayman (Beverly, Mass./Governor's Academy) each tallied two markers apiece. First-year Erin McCarthy (Old Lyme, Conn./Canterbury School) and senior Siri Mason (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock) both tallied solo markers to round out the scoring for Endicott. Mason also led the Gulls with three assists on the afternoon.
 
With the score knotted at 10-10 in the first overtime session, Mason gave the Gulls an 11-10 lead at the 3:01 mark. Sharick then responded with a free position goal for the Blue and White with 1:01 to play in the first overtime frame to force both teams to play an extra session. In the second overtime period, Whitney was awarded with a free position attempt of her own and potted the game-winner with 2:29 to play, which held true for an Endicott, 12-11, victory.
 
Endicott opened the scoring in the second half with back-to-back goals at the 28:24 mark from Whitney and with 23:21 on the clock from Lennon that gave the Gulls their largest advantage of the contest (9-6). Wheaton answered with four-straight goals, three on the free position, over the remaining 19:30 of the second stanza. Sabol and Tewksbury began the spurt with free position goals at 19:30 and 9:42, respectively. Sabol then netted an unassisted tally with 7:25 left on the clock, which evened the game at 9-9. Mallis capped the run and gave the Blue and White their first lead of the game (10-9) with 2:33 to play from the top of the eight-meter arc.
 
Clayman potted her sixth goal of the season for Endicott to even the score once again (10-10) with 1:58 to play in regulation, which led to the eventual overtime periods.
 
Endicott scored the first 4-of-5 goals over the opening 9:13 of the first stanza to begin the contest. Peters cut the deficit to a single goal (5-4) with back-to-back tallies 20-seconds apart, but Wheaton and Endicott traded markers over the middle portion of the stanza, to put the score at 7-6 at the break.

Wheaton first-year goalkeeper Molly Witten (Bethesda, Md./Dublin School) saved five shots for the Blue and White in relief, while Endicott goalkeeper Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree) registered 12 saves to pick up her second win of the season (2-1).

Defensively, Cohen scooped up a team-high five ground balls for the Lyons, while Sabol won three draws on the afternoon. Lennon and Clayman won eight and seven draw controls for Endicott, while Lennon also led the Gulls with three ground balls.

The Lyons went 17-for-22 on clearing attempts and 7-for-14 on shots from the top of the eight meter arc. The Blue and White also held a 29-26 advantage in shots and a 20-13 differential in ground balls. Endicott went 10-for-14 in transition, while maintaining a 18-9 margin in draw controls.

Wheaton (2-4) travels to Roger Williams for an out of league contest next Wednesday, March 18 at 4 p.m., while Endicott (2-1) hosts Bates College on Tuesday, March 17 in non-conference action.
