Box Score NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's basketball team had four players finish in double-figures as the Lyons defeated visiting Maine-Augusta 73-58 on Thursday night in Emerson Gymnasium.
With the win the Lyons improve to 4-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 at Emerson Gymnasium. The Moose fall to 10-4 overall.
Wheaton was led by 18 points from senior Rebecca Arnone who ended the night 6-13 from the floor and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Senior Kiley Shoemaker added 16 points for the Lyons, while pulling down nine rebounds and coming up with two blocks. Oppie Morris picked up her second double-double of the season and her career after knocking down 12 points and pulling down 11 boards in the victory. Junior Sophie Black came off the bench to earn her first career double-double, netting 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Lyons.
Jamie Plummer led all players with 26 points for the Moose, finishing 11-20 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, while picking up two blocks and four steals. Darby Toth ended the night with 17 points for UMA on a 7-15 performance from the floor.
Wheaton took the lead early in the first quarter with a quick Shoemaker layup. The Lyons held the lead thoughout the entire quarter, going up by as many as eight with 5:31 remaining on an Arnone three-pointer.
Plummer knotted the game at 25-25 in the second quarter, before giving the Moose their first lead moments later with a layup. The quarter was tied three more times before Abby Hamilton gave the lead back to Wheaton with back-to-back successful free-throws right before halftime.
The second half was all Wheaton as the Lyons pulled ahead to a comfortable lead. Two made free-throws by Black with 2:39 on the clock handed Wheaton it's largest lead of the third quarter. An Arnone layup with 2:35 left in the contest earned the Lyons their largest lead of the game, putting them ahead of the visitors 70-55. Toth cut the deficit to 12 points moments later, but a Meghan Stovall three-pointer with seconds left ended the contest 73-58.
Wheaton ended the game a perfect 13-13 from the free-throw line, while Maine-Augusta was a perfect 3-3.
The Lyons return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against the Coast Guard. Wheaton will be helping the Fundamentals of Business class collect canned foods in order to help out the community this holiday season. Those interested in participating are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the contest.
Wheaton will also honor Shoemaker on Saturday for her addition to the Wheaton 1,000+ point club. Shoemaker has now scored 1,040 points over her four years at Wheaton.
