Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Taking on conference competitor, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers, the Wheaton College women's soccer team couldn't find their groove as they dropped, 3-1, on Tuesday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play.
With a tough first half, the Lyons (7-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) evenly maintained possession against the Engineers (6-4-2, 3-1 NEWMAC) with shots on goal from Julia Cipriano and Caren McCarthy.
MIT put up close back-to-back goals in the 21st and 26th minute to take the 2-0 lead.
Sydney Ferrell responded with a shot, but was just wide of the net. In the final minutes of the half, Cipriano took one more shot and Julie Beyar tried to place corner kick to get Wheaton on the board, but fell just short.
In the second half, Ferrell found her opportunity as she nailed a shot right off the post and then followed up by taking control of her own rebound and pushing it in for a Lyons goal, making it 2-1.
The Engineers didn't let up as they tallied one more goal in the 78th minute.
MIT goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann advanced to 6-4-2 overall. Wheaton goalkeeper Taylor Wilson moves to 0-1.
The teams were evenly matched with shots at 16-16, but the Lyons held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Wheaton brings the action back home for a conference matchup on Saturday as they take on 2014 NEWMAC champion Springfield College (7-3-1, 3-1 NEWMAC) with game time set for 12 p.m. at Mirrione Stadium.
