NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team fell to visiting MIT , 9-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Beard Field House in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
The loss drops the Lyons to 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, while MIT improves to 7-0 overall and in the NEWMAC.
In doubles action, Izzy Gorham and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley could not overcome the Engineers No. 1 pair of Dora Tzeng and Krystal Lai, falling 8-4. Rena Liu and Ava Soleimany took down the Lyons Arielle Klopsis and Connor O'Keefe 8-2 from the No. 3 spot. Despite their best efforts, Stassy Furber and Caroline Stanclift fell 8-1 to Sonya Das and Wendi Kong in the No. 2 position.
Gorham (No. 1) and Klopsis (No. 6) each fell 6-0, 6-0 in their singles matches, while DiNicola-Fawley (No.2) dropped hers 6-1, 6-0. Furber lost to Kong 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 position, while Stanclift (No. 4) fell 6-0, 6-3. In the No. 5 match, O'Keefe lost 6-2 to Alana Peters in the first set, before dropping the second 6-1.
The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Babson for a 3:30 p.m. NEWMAC contest.
