Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. – Heading into double overtime, senior Julia Cipriano found the opening to drive in the game winning goal and lift the women's soccer team to a, 2-1, victory over the Wellesley College Blue on Saturday.
The Lyons advance to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Blue fall to 5-2-2 and 0-1-1 overall in the NEWMAC.
In the first half it remained quiet for the majority time on the scoreboard. Kaylee Sye, Cipriano and Megan Healy offered shots for the Lyons. But it was in the 27th minute where Wellesley broke through first with a goal to get them on the board first.
Entering the second half, Cipriano and Sarah Buckley kept pushing forward for Wheaton as they put up shots and hung on to the momentum.
Caren McCarthy finally found in opening for the Lyons as she tied the game with a goal in the 65th minute. She was assisted by Cipriano.
Following that goal, the rest of regulation remained evenly matched as both teams offered shots and blocks as they tried to grab the lead.
Heading into the first overtime period, Wheaton offered two shots from Cipriano and Julie Beyar, but the scoreboard held at 1-1 as the teams headed another overtime.
It was two minutes in second overtime when Buckley found Cipriano who knocked it in the net, her sixth goal of the season, ending the game and snapping Wheaton's losing streak.
Goalkeepr Sarah Caron grabbed her first win of the season as she collected five big saves.
The Lyons outshot the Blue 16-9.
Wheaton travels to MIT on Tuesday for another NEWMAC competition with game time slated for 4 p.m.
