WORCESTER, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team played host Worcester Polytechnic Institute to a 0-0 draw this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons are now 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in league play, while the Engineers are 4-3-1 and 1-0-1.
Wheaton held a 16-15 shooting edge, while WPI owned a 6-2 margin in shots on goal. Both teams were awarded four corner kicks in the match.
Sophomore keeper Olivia King (Simsbury, Conn.) was credited with six saves to record her third shutout of the season for the Lyons, while sophomore goalie Abigail Marsolais (Norton, MA) earned her first collegiate clean sheet after stopping both shots on net for the Engineers.
Sophomore forward Camila Leiva (Warwick, R.I.) paced Wheaton's offense with three shots, including a pair on net. Senior forward Katie Adiletta (Bolton, MA) led WPI with six shots, including four on target.
Neither team had great scoring chances in the opening half of play. The Engineers' best chance followed a corner kick opportunity where senior back Jess English (Ledyard, CT) ripped a low ground shot right into the clutches of King, who fell forward to smother the attempt in the 85th minute of play.
The Lyons' best chance came in the game's final minute with Leiva playing the ball back to junior back Alex Dore (Merion Station, Pa.), who unleashed a shot from outside the box that caught too much of the upper right cross bar.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, September 23 when it hosts Fitchburg State University at 4:00 p.m. at Mirrione Stadium, while WPI hosts Mount Holyoke College on September 26 at Noon in NEWMAC play.
