#5 Women's Tennis Falls to #4 Mount Holyoke in Quarterfinals

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – In the battle of the 'Lyons' the #5 Wheaton College women's tennis team faced off against #4 Mount Holyoke in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Quarterfinals at the MHC Tennis Courts.

In the end it was the Mount Holyoke Lyons who came out on top, defeating the Wheaton Lyons 5-0. With the victory Mount Holyoke will move onto the semi-finals on Saturday against top seeded MIT.

In doubles action, the tandem of Connor O'Keefe and Francisca Secor put up a fight in the No. 3 spot against Amy Chen and Madison Rosen. Despite the effort, the Wheaton pair fell 9-7.

Izzy Gorham and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley dropped their match 8-2 to Margaux Holloschutz and Ayame Yazawa in the No. 1 spot. Wheaton fell by the same score in the No. 2 doubles set.

With a 3-0 advantage heading into the singles action, Holloschutz picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over DiNicola-Fawley in the No. 2 flight, putting MHC just one set away from victory. Michelle Cai sealed the win for the Lyons of MHC with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Secor in the No. 6 position.

Wheaton, who end the fall with a 5-7 overall record (4-5 NEWMAC) made its 14th straight appearance in the NEWMAC Tournament, dating back to the 2002 season. Overall, the Lyons have appeared in 16 conference tournaments since the 1999 season. Wheaton advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2010 and 2011.
