Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Grabbing their fourth straight win, the Wheaton College women's soccer team shut out the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears with the guidance of senior captain Julia Cipriano who seized two assists and one goal in the 3-0 win on Tuesday.
With this victory, the Lyons move to 11-5-1 overall on the season and 4-2-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition as the Bears drop to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in conference.
It was a lively first half for Wheaton as Sarah Buckley and Alyssa Gilman put up the first shots for the Lyons.
It was in the 20th minute when Cipriano found an open Caren McCarthy who shot in her third goal of the season to put the Lyons on the board.
Wheaton's offense held control of the ball for most of the half as they put up more shot attempts, but it was Megan Healy who broke through and found her opening, shooting in her third goal of the season to bring the lead up 2-0. She was assisted by Cipriano who tallied her sixth assist of the season.
The only shot attempts the Bears put up were at the beginning of the second half, but came up empty.
Later in the 57th minute, Cipriano found her opportunity to knock in a goal of her own to get the 3-0 jump against the Bears. She collects her tenth goal of the season, leading the team with goals and assists.
Goalkeeper Leann Wolf advances to 8-3-1 overall while grabbing one save in this matchup. This was her fifth shutout of the year.
The Lyons outshot the Bears 13-6.
Wheaton brings the action back home to continue NEWMAC play on Saturday this homecoming weekend. They take on Clark University at Christina Mirrione '99 Stadium with game time scheduled for 2 p.m.
