NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team picked up a crucial 6-3 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over visiting Clark University on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.

With the win the Lyons move to 5-5 on the season and 4-4 in conference play, which clinches the team a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament. Clark falls to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the NEWMAC.

The Lyons put themselves in great position early after taking all three doubles points. The points did not come easy however, as two of the three matches were forced into tie-breakers. Izzy Gorham and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley were one of the duos forced to win their match in a tie-breaker, defeating Isabelle Long and Emily Shuman 9-8 (5) in the No. 1 position.

Arielle Klopsis and Connor O'Keefe (No. 3) also won in the tie-breaker, taking down Rebecca Kravetz and Kera Snyder 9-8 (4). Stassy Furber and Caroline Stanclift had their hands full with Adrien Horowitz and Phoebe Hughes in the No. 2 spot, but were able to pull out an 8-5 victory.

Singles action saw Furber hand Hughes a quick 6-0, 6-0 loss in the No. 3 spot. Playing in the No. 4 singles position, Stanclift guaranteed the Lyons the win with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Snyder. O'Keefe earned Wheaton its final point with a hard fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) win over Horowitz in the No. 5 spot.

Clark picked up two of its points in No. 1 and No. 2 singles with Long earning a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gorham (No. 1) and Shuman taking down DiNicola-Fawley 6-2, 3-6, 10-3. Misa Mai earned the final point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Klopsis in the No. 6 spot.

Wheaton returns to the court on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Colby for a 12 p.m. match.
