Senior earns her 50th career victory in singles and doubles play
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team remained perfect in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play (3-0) on Saturday afternoon as the Lyons defeated Smith College, 8-1, at the Smith Tennis Courts.
Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) claimed her 50th career victory in both singles and doubles play on the afternoon as the senior captain defeated Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) by a 6-0, 6-2 score at No. 1 singles and also teamed up with sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) for an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Marlowe is now 50-12 overall in singles competition and 50-15 overall in doubles action for her career.
Brazell went on to register a 6-0, 6-2 triumph against Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Academy) at No. 2 singles, while Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) posted a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles for the Lyons. Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 4 position and senior Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) fashioned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
In doubles play, Gorham and DiNicola-Fawley breezed to an 8-2 decision at the No. 2 position and juniors' Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) and Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine/Cushing Academy) produced an 8-4 win in the No. 3 slot to complete Wheaton's first sweep of doubles competition in a match this season.
Wheaton (3-2, 3-0 NEWMAC) hosts Emerson College for a NEWMAC match on Tuesday, September 23 at 4 p.m. Smith (0-3, 0-3 NEWMAC) travels to Mount Holyoke next Tuesday for a conference clash at 5 p.m.
