Lyons improve to 2-0 in conference play
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team handed Springfield College a 6-3 loss in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
Senior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View), sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and juniors Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) were all double-winners for the Lyons.
The quartet lifted Wheaton to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play as Marlowe and Brazell bested Springfield's Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) by an 8-6 score at the No. 1 position. Gorham and DiNicola-Fawley made quick work of Melanie Thulin (Manchester, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn./Wamogo Regional) at No. 2 with an 8-4 triumph.
In singles play, Marlowe breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 1 over London, while Brazell dealt Foster a 6-1, 6-1 loss at the No. 2 slot. Gorham went on to defeat Thulin at No. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-3 score and DiNicola-Fawley claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win against Shemms at the No. 4 position.
Wheaton (2-2, 2-0 NEWMAC) travels to Smith College next Saturday for a conference matchup scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Springfield (0-2, 0-2 NEWMAC) hosts MIT tomorrow in a NEWMAC contest at 1 p.m.
