Wolters stops 11 shots in the win, records 200th career save

NORTON, Mass. – Trailing 3-1 with less than ten minutes to play in the contest, the Wheaton College field hockey team rallied with a pair of goals before the end of the second half to force overtime and eventually claim a thrilling 4-3 victory over Lasell College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Grellier Field.

Wheaton first-year forward/midfielder Kelsey Buckley (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) provided the game-winning goal at the 83:49 mark, while classmate Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) potted the game-tying strike with 1:45 remaining in the second half. All three goals scored by Peters this season have either been game-tying markers or game-winners.

Sophomore Michelle Trainor (Amesbury, Mass./Saint Thomas Aquinas) added her first goal of the 2014 campaign at 61:54 to cut into Wheaton's 3-1 deficit at the time and junior forward/midfielder Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) netted the Blue and White's first tally on a feed from classmate Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) at 37:54.

Senior forward Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) and sophomore Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) also dished out assists in the win. Senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) stopped a game-high 11 shots to improve to 4-1 on the season. Wolters' tenth save, coming at 75:24, marked her 200th career save in 27 games played. In the overtime session, Wolters turned away five shots including a penalty stroke at 72:05 and a quality scoring chance at 81:59 before Buckley sent Wheaton home with its second overtime triumph of the year at 83:49.

Lasell senior forward Nikita Soares (Westport, Mass./Westport) paced the hosts with two goals and one assist for a game-high five points. Junior midfielder Ashley Gleason (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) also contributed one goal and one assist. First-year goalkeeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) made ten saves in the loss.

Down 3-2 after Trainor's goal at 61:54, Peters finished a feed from Gage a few moments after Wheaton initiated its offense in the circle off of a penalty corner. Buckley followed with the game-winner in the 84th minute by diving and redirecting McCann's play towards the cage past Landry for her second career goal and first-ever game-winner.

The Lyons outshot the Lasers, 28-23, and won the penalty corners matchup, 8-6.

Wheaton, who is off to its first 4-1 start since 2006, returns to action on Saturday, September 13 as the Lyons host Colby-Sawyer on Nordin Field at 11:30 a.m. Lasell (1-3) welcomes Regis College to its campus this Saturday for a non-conference matchup starting at noon. With the win today over Lasell, the Lyons are now 6-1 in the all-time series which dates back to 2005.
