Box Score Cipriano nets game-winning goal in 52nd minute
BRISTOL, R.I. – Wheaton College junior forward/midfielder Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) scored the game's lone goal of the afternoon on a feed from senior co-captain Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) in the 52nd minute to guide the Lyons to a 1-0 victory over Roger Williams University in non-conference action on Friday.
Corigliano set up the game-winning tally with a beautiful chip pass over the Hawks' back line to Cipriano who gathered the loose ball near the penalty area and buried it home for a 1-0 advantage.
In the 53rd minute, the Lyons nearly made it 2-0 as Corigliano had back-to-back shots at point blank range turned away by Roger Williams' first-year goalkeeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough).
Wheaton went on to outshoot the Hawks 7-4 after Cipriano's goal down the stretch. The Lyons compiled two quality scoring chances during that span as first-year Caren McCarthy (San Jose, Calif./Pioneer) struck the crossbar at the 75:49 mark and classmate Megan Healy (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) fired a shot off the post in the 83rd minute.
Lyons' junior goalkeeper Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) picked up the victory (14th career, fifth shutout) with two saves in the contest. Martin stopped six shots in the loss.
Cipriano led all student-athletes with four shots (three on goal), while Corigliano finished with three – all on goal – and junior back/midfielder Julie Beyar (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) registered two shots to pace Wheaton. Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) and Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) each had three shots on the afternoon for the Hawks.
Wheaton held a slim, 13-11, advantage in shots overall, while Roger Williams notched a 5-3 differential in corner kicks.
The Lyons (1-0) host Saint Joseph's (Me.) tomorrow evening in a non-conference contest at Mirrione Stadium at 5:00 p.m. Roger Williams (0-1) will host Lasell College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
