Box Score Berry registers first career double-double in the loss
NEWPORT, R.I. – Trailing 58-55 with 11:54 remaining in the second half, the Salve Regina University men's basketball team used a 20-4 run to pull away from Wheaton College for an eventual 83-69 victory in non-conference action on Thursday night at Rodgers Recreation Center.
Wheaton sophomore center Timothy Berry (Sterling, Mass./St. Peter Marian) paced the visitors with his first career double-double on 11 points, ten rebounds, one block and an assist. Senior guard Eddie Capstick (Worcester, Mass./Marianapolis Prep) added 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Zach Parsons (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) chipped in with ten points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. First-year guard Ryan Fogarty (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) also contributed eight points off the bench.
Salve Regina guard Isiah Pringle (Queens, N.Y./Brewster Academy) led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting including a 6-for-8 performance from long distance, three rebounds and two assists. First-year guard Bryce Boggs (Hyde Park, Mass./Tabor Academy) had 19 points and Adam Quinlan (East Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Brenden Fowler (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) both tallied 12 points apiece.
The Seahawks shot 44.9-percent (31-for-69) from the field, 34.8-percent (8-for-23) from long range, held a slight 45-44 edge in the rebounding department and also posted a 22-11 margin in points off turnovers. The Lyons shot 35.1-percent (20-for-57) from the field and 71.9-percent (23-for-32) at the free throw line.
Down 51-50 at the 15:02 mark of the second half after a Mike Cannon (New York, N.Y./Hyde School) jumper, Wheaton used an 8-4 run to take a 58-55 advantage. Capstick and senior guard Mike O'Loughlin (Milford, N.H./Milford) canned a pair of free throws, while Fogarty buried a jump shot at 13:14 and Cannon capped the spurt with a layup at 11:54.
Salve Regina responded with a 20-4 run, highlighted by Boggs and Pringle who both collected eight points each during the offensive outburst, to secure its first victory of the season. The Seahawks went on to lead by as many as 18 points with 4:04 left to play, which marred a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes.
Boggs did most of his damage in the second stanza with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a 5-for-7 showing at the charity stripe, while his counterpart, Pringle poured in 16 points in the opening half on 6-of-8 shooting that also featured a 4-for-5 mark from three-point land.
Wheaton (1-2) hosts Roger Williams University on Saturday, November 22 inside Emerson Gymnasium at 1 p.m. Salve Regina (1-2) travels to Worcester State University this Saturday for a non-league contest 1 p.m.
