NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's basketball team defeated Suffolk University, 77-59, in the championship game of the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament on Sunday evening inside Emerson Gymnasium behind a pair of double-doubles from senior Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) and junior Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius).
The Lyons (2-0) earned their ninth tournament title in program history improving to 29-13 all-time since 1990. Warren-Powers, who passed away on May 22, 2012, was a standout athlete in basketball and softball at Bishop Feehan High School becoming the second female athlete to score 1,000 career points for the Shamrocks. She went on to play both sports at Wheaton and, upon graduating, continued to be an avid supporter of each program. As a coach, Cheryl impacted many including the student-athletes she was involved with on the Lyons softball team and the girls' basketball program at Foxboro High School.
Brickley registered a season-high 20 points on 8-of-12-shooting from the floor, alongside 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Shoemaker poured in 11 points and hauled in a season-best 16 rebounds.
Brickley claimed CWP Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors for the second-straight season averaging 17 points and 9.5 rebounds over both games played on the weekend. Brickley also moved into tenth all-time on the career points list at Wheaton as she surpassed Allison Yelle '88 with her 34 points over both games to give her 1,052 total in her career (80 games played). Yelle finished her four-year career with 1,049 points.
Senior guard Kirsten Ferrari (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) added a career-high 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor – which included a 4-for-5 showing from beyond the arc – and four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Suffolk sophomore guard and All-Tournament team selection Kelsey Schiebel (Windham, N.H./Windham) poured in a team-high 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and a block. Junior guard Alessandra Quadri (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) and first-year guard Alexandra Nagri (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) both recorded eight points each, while teammates Shelby Santini (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) added six points apiece, respectively.
Wheaton opened up a 20-9 gap on the Rams over the first 9:09 of action as Ferrari and senior guard Laura Pierce (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) both buried a pair of three-pointers to highlight the run.
Suffolk closed the gap to 36-23 at halftime receiving six points from Schiebel down the stretch and four points by Nagri along with buckets from first-year forward Caitlyn Caramello (Revere, Mass./Revere) and senior forward Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic).
The Lyons pulled away in the second half using a 26-16 run to claim a 62-39 advantage with 7:59 remaining in the contest. Junior guard Rebecca Arnone (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) led the run with a team-high eight points, while Brickley chipped in with six points to help the hosts secure the eventual victory.
Wheaton shot 44.3-percent (27-for-61) from the floor, 42.3-percent (11-for-26) from long distance and dished out 20 assists. The Lyons also held a 22-16 differential in points off turnovers and a 30-20 margin in points in the paint.
Wheaton (2-0), who is receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/USA Today Division III Preseason Poll, travels to Newbury on Wednesday, November 19 for a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. Suffolk (1-1) hosts Regis College next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
