NCAA TOURNAMENT: Wheaton Tops Daniel Webster In First Round

Box Score

Lyons to play winner of Dickinson College/Tufts University in second round

POSTGAME COMMENTS: Wheaton College | Daniel Webster College

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men's soccer team claimed a 5-0 victory over Daniel Webster College in NCAA Tournament first round action on Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field.

Wheaton will play the winner of Dickinson College (11-5-2) and Tufts University (10-2-4) on Sunday at Keefe Field with kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.

Daniel Webster's historic 2014 season comes to a close at 15-6-1 overall. The Eagles, who earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship, finished the year with a program record 15 victories surpassing the previous mark of 12 set in 2009 and 2010. The Eagles are now 0-2-0 in NCAA Tournament postseason play.

Junior midfielder Noah Kossoff (New York, N.Y./Birch Wathen Lenox School) broke open the scoring for Wheaton in the 17th minute when his shot from about 25-yards out deflected off of a Daniel Webster defender's foot and sailed over junior goalkeeper Sean Hamilton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

At the 20:40 mark, first-year Liam Daniels (New York, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) doubled Wheaton's advantage with a one-touch finish near the middle of the net for his third goal of the 2014 campaign. Senior midfielder Matheus Goncalves (Framingham, Mass./Worcester Academy) initiated the tally with a pass to first-year forward Amara Sesay (Bronx, N.Y./Martin Luther King) through the right channel. Sesay then pushed the ball forward into space on the right flank and delivered a perfect cross to Daniels inside the box who was left wide open after Wheaton began its counter attack.

The Lyons closed out the first half with a goal at 41:40 after first-year midfielder Sean Hurlburt's (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) throw-in bounced around the box and eventually was knocked in by a Daniel Webster defender.

Wheaton added two more goals in the second stanza highlighted by a beautiful individual effort from senior forward Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) who potted his 50th career goal at the 56:45 mark. At the top of the 18-yard box, Blair received a pass from classmate Scott Enman (Brooklyn, N.Y./Packer Collegiate Institute), turned quickly and proceeded to avoid two defenders with a pair of shifty dribbles to each side of the pitch and then slotted his shot into the lower right corner of the net to make it a 4-0 contest.

Goncalves capped the scoring two minutes and 12 seconds later with his fourth goal of the season on feeds from Sesay and junior forward/midfielder Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I./Wheeler School).

Hamilton, who earned NECC Goalkeeper of the Year honors earlier this season, finished the game with two saves in the loss (12-5). Wheaton junior goalkeeper Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) stopped two shots to record his ninth clean sheet of the season.

The Lyons held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 4-1 differential in corner kicks.

With today's victory, Wheaton improved to 3-0-0 against Daniel Webster in the all-time series, which dates back to 1989.
