Volleyball Takes Three At The 34th Annual Crabtree Classic

D. Wilson Named Tournament MVP

WINDHAM, Conn. - The Wheaton College women's volleyball team was victorious in all three of its matches at the 34th Annual Crabtree Classic, which included Framingham State University and the University of New England this afternoon and host Eastern Connecticut State University inside of Geissler Gymnasium.

All-Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) paced the Lyons with 32 kills (3.56 per set), 38 assists (4.22 per set) and recorded seven block assists in her nine sets played on the afternoon. D. Wilson also tallied 12 digs (1.33 per set) and two service aces in the quad-match. Sophomore Caitlin Hellebrand (Corona, Calif./Sanitago) compiled 50 assists (6.25 per set) and eight service aces, while defensively, first-year Stephanie Martin (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) tallied a team-high 35 digs (5.00 per set) and Olivia Wilson (Alameda, Calif./Head Royce) recorded 29 digs (3.22 per set). Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) led the Lyons with eight blocks (one solo, seven assists).

WHEATON 3, EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17)

D. Wilson led the way for the Lyons in the first match recording 14 of her 32 kills, 12 assists, six digs and five block assists. Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) tallied nine kills (.615 kill percentage) and two block assists in the sweep, while Hellebrand notched 23 assists and four service aces on the the way to secure the match one victory.

The Warriors were led by Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury, Conn./Holy Cross) who notched a team-high nine kills and eight digs, while Allie Henry (Middletown, Conn./Mercy) tallied ten assists and four service aces. Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) chipped in with nine digs and a service ace as well.

WHEATON 3, FRAMINGHAM STATE 1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23)

D. Wilson recorded another 14 kills in the second match to go along with a match-high 26 assists, while Martin chipped in with a match-high 20 digs. Colleen Koen (Centervile, Mass./Barnstable) and Waelder tallied nine and seven kills, respectively. Hellebrand handed out 12 assists in the middle of the three matches and O. Wilson had ten digs of her own. Hellebrand and Anna Strock (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) each tallied three service aces en route to a 3-1 victory.

Framingham State sophomore Julie Wan (South Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) recorded a double-double with ten kills, ten digs and added eight service aces in the middle match. Senior Maribeth Martin (Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) dished out 13 assists, while Danielle Girard (Tivoli, N.Y./Red Hook) had two service aces and ten digs of her own. Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass/Agawam) added two solo blocks and eight kills to the Rams effort.

WHEATON 3, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-21)

Junior Sarah Alexander (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) paced the Lyons in the third and final match with a match-high eight kills and added a block assist. Hellbrand and Robyn D'Agostino (Three Bridges, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) handed out 15 and ten assists, respectively. D. Wilson (.571 percentage) and Taylor Matook (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) each had four kills in the third match. Jodi Katz (Needham, Mass./Needham) tallied four service aces leading the Lyons to the three match sweep at the Crabtree Classic.

The Nor'Easters were led by Erika Sawicki (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H./Oyster River) and Grayson Szezepaniak (Lakewood, Ohio/Saint Joseph Acadmy) who each has six kills in the afternoon's final match. First-year Brooke Gibbons (Miami, Fla./Brookline (Mass.)) dished out 14 assists and had eight kills, while sophomore Nikki Matthewson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) led the team in digs with 12. Sawicki, Janelle and Gibbons each had a pair of service aces in the loss.
