Box Score 2 Lyons now 17-12 on the season
AMHERST, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's volleyball team splits a pair of matches on day two of the Hall of Fame Tournament, hosted by Smith College and Amherst College, on Saturday evening. The Lyons defeated Wesleyan, 3-0, by scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-17 and fell to Williams, 3-0, by scores of 25-23, 25-21, 25-20.
WHEATON 3, WESLEYAN 0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17)
Junior right-side hitter Casey Hess (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) paced the Lyons' offense with eight kills (.500 hitting percentage), one service ace, a dig and two block assists. Classmate Arieanne Creighton (Brookline, N.H./Hollis Brookline) contributed seven kills and four digs, while sophomore Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) added five kills (.400 hitting percentage), one dig and two block assists.
Sophomore setter Caitlin Hellebrand (Corona, Calif./Santiago) also handed out nine assists and notched seven digs to aid the offense. First-year libero Stephanie Martin (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) highlighted the defense with team-high 17 digs alongside five assists and two service aces.
WILLIAMS 3, WHEATON 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20)
In match two of the day, junior outside hitter/setter Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) compiled seven kills, eight assists, 11 digs and two block assists to highlight Wheaton's efforts in the loss. Classmate Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) chipped in with five kills, two block assists and two solo blocks, while junior middle hitter Elise Waelder (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) had four kills, two digs, four block assists and one solo block.
Creighton put home five kills, Hellebrand registered 11 assists and five digs and Martin led the team again in digs with 17 to round the list of notable performances in match two.
Wheaton (17-12, 5-3 NEWMAC) hosts New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Babson College on Tuesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. Seniors Megan Donahue (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), Leigh Hunt (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and Jocelyn Stone (Harrisville, N.H.) will be honored prior to the match for all their contributions towards the women's volleyball program.
