Marlowe, Burleson take straight sets at No. 1 & No. 4 singles
Norton, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team posted a 9-0 sweep over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday afternoon inside the Beard Field House. With the victory this afternoon, the Lyons clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament which is slated to begin on Wednesday, October 22nd.
Seniors Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) and Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) each registered 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) had an easy time with Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) at No. 2 singles, collecting a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine/Cushing Academy) notched the same result at the No. 6 singles position over Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill).
Junior Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) grabbed the closest match of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles, while classmate Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) notched a 6-0, 6-2 win wrapping up singles play at the No. 5 position.
In doubles action, Marlowe teamed up with Brazell to shutout Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash./Interlake) and Gallant, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, while Gorham and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) bested Kravetz and Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine/South Portland), 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles position.
The Lyons finished the sweep this afternoon at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, when Furber and Stanclift topped Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and Emma Coppes (Muncy, Pa./Muncy).
Clark (3-11, 1-7 NEWMAC) wrapped up their first season this afternoon under head coach Laurance Kimbrough.
Wheaton (6-5, 5-3 NEWMAC) will take part in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend before hosting Mount Holyoke in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Wednesday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m.
