Howes nets game-winner in 43rd minute

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior midfielder/forward Kelsee Howes (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) converted her first career penalty kick in the 43rd minute of the contest to lift the Wheaton College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Emerson College on Tuesday night in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Rotch Field.

Howes buried her second goal of the season into the back of the net at the 42:47 mark after Wheaton generated a corner kick (41:27) and first-year Aunyes Hermantin (Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow Senior) had her shot blocked at 42:35.

In the second stanza, the Lyons limited Emerson to just four shots to claim their sixth shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) made two saves to register her fourth shutout on the year (eighth career).

Emerson sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn./Chesire Academy) stopped seven shots in the loss (3-3-0).

Wheaton outshot Emerson, 17-7, and also held a 5-0 margin in corner kicks. Lyons' senior midfielder Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) paced the visitors with a game-high seven shots (three on goal). Emerson junior midfielder Alyssa Giannone (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) guided the hosts with three shots (one on goal).

Wheaton (8-6-1, 2-3 NEWMAC) hosts Mount Holyoke this coming Saturday for a NEWMAC clash at 2 p.m. Emerson (4-8-1, 1-4 NEWMAC) takes on Springfield this Saturday at home at 1 p.m.
