Lyons push overall record to 5-5 on the season
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team handed Colby College a 7-2 loss on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Clark Tennis Courts.
Wheaton opened up the match with a 3-0 showing in doubles play as the No. 1 pairing of senior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) highlighted the Lyons' efforts with an 8-1 win over first-year Jamie Au (Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong/Hong Kong International) and senior Erica Talamo (Newton, Mass./BB&N). Izzy Gorham (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) claimed a hard-fought 9-7 victory at the No. 2 position, while Stassy Furber (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) and Caroline Stanclift (Camden, Maine/Cushing Academy) fashioned an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
In singles action, Marlowe cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, Brazell made quick work of Au at the No. 2 slot with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph and DiNicola-Fawley turned in a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot. Senior Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) wrapped up singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5 position.
Wheaton (5-5) returns to action this coming Thursday against Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at 4 p.m. Colby (3-1) takes on Simmons College on Monday at 10 a.m.
