Box Score Quiles scores game-winner for Pride in 73rd minute
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team fell to Springfield College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex.
Springfield first-year forward Kimberly Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) deposited the game-winning goal at the 72:33 mark on a feed from senior back Kelly Haines (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow). Haines' free kick deflected off the shoulder of a Wheaton defender and ricocheted directly to Quiles, who then slipped her shot into the net for her second tally of the season and first career game-winner.
Lyons' junior goalkeeper Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) made two saves in the loss (5-4-0). Pride senior goalkeeper Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Hofstra) stopped four shots in the win (6-3-2), highlighted by a pair of saves against Wheaton's Aunyes Hermantin (Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow Senior) and Brooke Collard (Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran) at the 78:32 mark and 82:15 mark, respectively.
Wheaton outshot Springfield, 10-8, in the contest, while the hosts held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Seniors Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) and Laila Razzaghi (Ringoes, N.J./Princeton Day School), sophomore Kaitlin Montoya (Placentia, Calif./Orange Lutheran) and Collard guided the Lyons in shots with two apiece.
Wheaton (7-6-1, 1-3 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday, October 14 against Emerson College in a NEWMAC matchup on the road at 6 p.m. Springfield (6-3-2, 3-1-1 NEWMAC) visits Clark University next Tuesday in a conference clash at 6 p.m.
