Women's Tennis Wins Third-Straight, Tops Mount Holyoke 8-1

Lyons move to 3-0 overall on season

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Powered by a dominant effort in doubles and wins in five of six singles, the Wheaton College women's tennis team defeated Mount Holyoke College, 8-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

The Lyons set the tone early as junior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and senior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) posted an 8-1 win at No.1 against MHC senior captains AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) and Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School).

Second doubles saw senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) defeat senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Saddle River Day School), 8-5.

In the third doubles, Wheaton seniors Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) prevailed by an 8-2 margin against MHC senior Kelsey Brower (Tuckerton, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and junior Sarah Anischik (Tolland, Conn./Tolland).

Singles action saw Marlowe defeat Konkel, 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, while Cooke downed Sayarath, 6-0, 6-1 at No.2. Bell and Holloschutz played a tough match at No.3 with Bell pulling out an eventual 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory.

At No.4, Brazell turned in a quick 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Anischik. Malik picked up the lone victory for Mount Holyoke in the fifth flight as she defeated Crom by a 6-3, 6-1 margin, but sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) beat Brower at No.6 by a 6-3, 6-1 score to complete the victory.

Wheaton (3-0) returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Springfield for a 1 p.m. match. Mount Holyoke (2-2) visits NEWMAC-newcomer Emerson College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
