Women's Tennis Remains Undefeated With Win Over Smith, 9-0

Lyons improve to 5-0 overall on the season

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team delivered 34th-year head coach Lynn Miller her 600th victory, combined between both the men's and women's tennis programs, on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts with a 9-0 shutout victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

Miller improves to 600-366-2 (.621 winning percentage) all-time as head coach of both tennis programs at Wheaton. Miller, who was inducted into the United State Tennis Association (USTA) of New England Hall of Fame in 2012, has guided the Lyons to 34 conference tournament appearances, two NEWMAC championships and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Miller also has been named NEWMAC Coach of the Year on five separate occasions between both programs.

Wheaton co-captains Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) and Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) secured an 8-3 triumph over freshman Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Academy) and sophomore Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) at No.1 doubles.

Senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) turned in a quick 8-0 victory against juniors Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) and Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) at No.2 doubles, while seniors Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win versus freshman Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) and junior Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong) at No.3.

In singles action, Marlowe pushed her record to 5-0 overall on the season – all at No.1 – with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Cheung. Cooke turned aside Samawi in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No.2 and Bell was victorious over Yi by a 6-0, 6-2 score at No.3.

Brazell won her match at No.4 singles against Margaret Anne Smith, 6-1, 6-1, while Crom made quick work of sophomore Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School), 6-0, 6-1. Wheaton sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) completed the shutout at No.6 against Tanco, 6-0, 6-4.

Wheaton (5-0) hosts Emerson College on Tuesday, September 24 at 4 p.m. Smith welcomes Mount Holyoke College to its campus next Tuesday, also at 4 p.m.
