Miller earns 599th career coaching win between both tennis programs
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team breezed to an 8-1 victory over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Courts.
Lyons' head coach Lynn Miller claimed her 599th career win earlier today as Miller has amassed 356 wins at the helm of the women's tennis program and 243 victories with the men's tennis team. Between both programs, Miller has a career record of 599-366-2 for a .620 winning percentage.
Wheaton junior co-captain Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View), freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev./The Meadows School) and senior Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School) were all double winners against the Pride.
Marlowe and Brazell opened up the match with an 8-0 triumph at No.1 doubles over Springfield sophomores Melanie Thulin (Manchester Center, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn./Wamogo Regional).
The Pride picked up their only win of day at No.2 doubles as freshmen Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) defeated Wheaton seniors Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) and Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).
At No.3 doubles, junior Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass./Cape Cod Academy) and Moore posted an 8-6 victory against junior Alanna Grady (Springfield, Mass./Emerson College) and senior Syndey Streimer (Msytic, Conn./Fishers Island).
Marlowe turned away London at No.1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Bell posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Streimer at No.2 singles. Brazell defeated Thulin, 6-1, 6-2 at No.3 and Crom bounced back at No.4 singles over Shemms by a 6-2, 6-0 score.
Wheaton sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) claimed a 6-1, 6-3 triumph versus Foster at No.5 and Moore finished off the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Grady at No.6 singles.
The Lyons (4-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) host Smith College in a NEWMAC contest scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 21. Springfield (1-2) travels to MIT tomorrow for a conference matchup at 1 p.m.
