Women's Lacrosse Turns Away Smith, 13-5

Sabol buries a game-high three markers

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team kept its unblemished conference record intact as the Lyons posted a 13-5 triumph over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Brooke Sabol (Landgrove, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) scored a career-high three goals, dished out one assist, scooped up two ground balls and caused one turnover for Wheaton. Junior Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), freshman Mia Cambi (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and senior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) added two goals apiece.

Smith freshman Christina Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) registered two goals for the Pioneers while sophomore Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), freshman Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) and junior Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley) chipped in with solo markers.

Freshman Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) jumpstarted a 3-0 run for Wheaton with her sixth goal of the season at the 28:02 mark. Moreira pushed the gap to 2-0 with 25:32 on the scoreboard on a nice feed from Bush and Cambi closed out the run with a tally at 21:02.

After the Pioneers and Lyons alternated on the next three goals (4-2), Wheaton went on a 7-0 tear and never looked back over a 24:58 span. Sabol and freshman Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, Mass./Concord) concluded the first half with markers at 8:28 and 2:30, respectively.

Sophomore Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) put the Lyons ahead by a 7-2 margin with her 13th goal of the season at 25:12 of the second stanza and Cambi followed with her second marker of the game at 22:45. Moreira increased Wheaton's lead to 10-2 at 18:28 and Sabol wrapped up the 7-0 run with a man-down goal at 13:30.

Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stopped a game-high six shots to improve her record to 5-3 overall. Smith junior goalkeeper Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made four saves.

The Lyons went 5-for-7 in clear attempts, won the draw controls matchup, 10-9, and outshot the hosts 27-14. Both teams tied in the groundballs column recording 16 each.

Wheaton (5-4, 3-0 NEWMAC) travels to Wellesley on Tuesday, April 9 for a NEWMAC clash at 4:30 p.m. Smith (3-8, 0-2 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College in NEWMAC action on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
