Box Score Beatty collects six points for Beavers
NORTON, Mass. – Trailing 8-7 with 18:03 remaining in the contest, fourth-seeded Babson College scored four unanswered goals to advance to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Lacrosse championship round with an 11-8 victory over first-seeded Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field.
Babson (9-7) will take on third-seeded Springfield College (10-7) at 1 p.m. tomorrow for the NEWMAC Tournament championship at Keefe Field. Wheaton, who captured its fourth NEWMAC regular season title in program history with a 6-0 record this spring, has its season come to a close at 11-7 overall. The Pride will look to win their second-straight NEWMAC championship on Sunday while the Beavers aim for their sixth conference title in program history.
Junior Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) led all scorers with six points on two goals and four helpers. Senior Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) potted three goals and two draw controls. Classmate Taylor Kralovenec (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich), freshman Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and sophomore Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) all chipped in with two markers apiece. Kralovenc also added three assists and ground ball.
Wheaton junior Charlotte De Santis (Darien, Conn./Cushing Academy) netted a team-high three goals including one a free position attempt. Classmate Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) found the back of the net twice while freshman Jenna Tewksbury (Concord, N.H./Concord) and sophomore Melanie Sharick (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) had one tally each.
Freshman Allie Bush (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) dished out two assists to increase her season total to 32 helpers which ranks second all-time on the single season list.
Tied 7-7 with at the 21:53 mark of the second half, De Santis took advantage of a free position attempt with 18:03 left to play for her 36th goal of the season and a slim 8-7 lead. Farina responded for the Beavers with 12:12 on the scoreboard to spark Babson's four-goal run. Spang gave Babson its first lead of the game at 5:30 with an unassisted tally and Kralovenec sealed the victory with a goal at 3:02. Beatty capped the scoring with her 49th marker of the season.
Lyons' sophomore goalkeeper Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) kept the Blue and White in the contest with the scored tied at 8-8 making three saves – two on free position attempts – before Spang buried the eventual game-winning tally for Babson. Ananian finished with eight saves total (four in each half). Junior Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) turned away four shots for the visitors.
Wheaton held a 6-4 lead at the break as De Santis and Mills led the way with two goals each. The Beavers closed a 5-2 deficit with 7:35 left to play receiving markers from Farina and Spang.
Moreira compiled a game-high five draw controls for Wheaton to finish second all-time in program history with 165 total.
Babson outshot the Lyons, 20-12, and went 8-for-10 in clear attempts. The Beavers also won the ground balls matchup, 11-3.
