Second Half Surge Propels No. 22 MIT Past Wheaton

Box Score

Krishnamacher provides two goals, including game-winner

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play as the Lyons were dealt a 3-1 setback by MIT, ranked No. 22 overall in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, on Tuesday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium.

MIT used a three goal surge in the second half spearheaded by a pair of goals from junior forward Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn./Phillips Academy) less than two minutes apart to improve its record to 3-1 overall in NEWMAC action. Senior midfielder Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y./Albany) got the offense going with her first goal of the season at the 46:02 mark.

Wheaton received its lone goal from junior Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) in the 56th minute on a cross by freshman Kaitlin Montoya (Placentia, Calif./Orange Lutheran).

Ahead 1-0, MIT's Krishnamachar scored her first goal of the afternoon following a cross from sophomore Priyanka Gaur (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis), bringing Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Thacker (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) far enough out of the net to sneak the ball into the left corner of the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Krishnamachar received a pass from senior Michaelann Rodriguez (Florence, Ala./Florence) and pocketed her fourth goal of the season in the exact same manner as the previous goal.

Corigliano put Wheaton on the board at the 55:58 mark as she headed the ball into the left corner of the net and past the hands of freshman goalkeeper Tamar Weseley (Weston, Conn./Hopkins) for her third goal of the season. Montoya provided the cross collecting her team-leading fourth helper of the year.

With 18 minutes remaining on the clock, Corigliano nearly cut into the deficit with a blocked shot inside the box, while sophomore forward Cat Amick (Vashon, Wash./Vashon Island) also had a solid scoring opportunity turned away six minutes later with another blocked shot by the MIT back line.

Wheaton continued to pressure the goal late in the contest as Weseley robbed Lyons' junior Kelsee Howes (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) of a potential goal punching her shot just over the crossbar in the 80th minute.

The Engineers outshot Wheaton, 25-16, and held a 4-1 advantage in corners. Thacker saved a game-high nine shots for the Lyons, while MIT freshman goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) made two saves and Weseley totaled six. Both goalkeepers split a half as Uhlmann received the start and Weseley played the second stanza.

Wheaton (7-5-1, 2-1-0 NEWMAC) hosts Springfield College in NEWMAC action on Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m. MIT (7-2-2, 3-1-0 NEWMAC) welcomes Clark University to its campus for a conference clash on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lyons are 26-10-2 in the all-time series against the Engineers dating back to 1979.
