Box Score Corigliano nets lone goal for Lyons
NORTON, Mass. – For the third consecutive season, the Wheaton College women's soccer team and Babson College played to a double overtime draw as the Lyons and Beavers tied 1-1 on Tuesday evening at Mirrione Stadium in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt.
Babson sophomore forward Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) pushed the visitors out ahead early in the contest with her second career goal and first of the 2013 season in the eighth minute striking a loose ball into the right side of the net just outside of the box.
Tyson's marker broke a 271:01 scoreless streak between the two squads as Wheaton and Babson had played to a pair of 0-0 double overtime draws over the last two seasons. Colleen Liffers '11 netted the last goal in the series prior to today in the 47th minute of a 1-0 win for Wheaton on October 19, 2010. Tyson's tally also broke up the Lyons 488:15 shutout streak going into today's game.
Wheaton junior Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) evened the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute heading home her fourth goal of the season on a free kick taken by sophomore back Julie Beyar (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side).
The Lyons outshot the Beavers 25-5 overall and 14-1 in the second half alone. Wheaton also held a 3-1 advantage in corners. Babson junior goalkeeper Melina Kapotsis (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) made five saves, while her counterpart sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) stopped two shots.
In the second overtime session, Babson sophomore Nikki Beatham (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) tested Wilson with a shot in the 101st minute, but Wilson thwarted the attempt to keep the score at 1-1. Beyar ripped a shot near the right side of the box at 107:16 to the right of goal and with less than two minutes to play junior Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) lifted a quality bid just over the crossbar to highlight both team's last minute scoring chances.
Wheaton (12-5-2, 7-1-1 NEWMAC) travels to Smith College on Saturday, November 2 for its final NEWMAC contest of the season at 1 p.m. Babson (9-4-4, 4-3-3 NEWMAC) awaits its placement in the upcoming conference tournament.
