Box Score Chick notches three points in final home game
NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College freshman midfielder Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) made "Senior Day" a memorable one for the class of 2013 on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field against WPI as she delivered the game-winning goal with time expired in the first overtime session to lift the Lyons to a 2-1 triumph over the Engineers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Prior to the game, seniors Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional), Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) were all honored for their contributions towards the field hockey program.
With time expired on the scoreboard in the first overtime period, Bruce redirected a shot taken by Chick into the lower left corner of the cage off of a penalty corner for her first-career game-winning marker. Freshman Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) was credited with an assist on the insert to Chick near the left side of the circle.
WPI sophomore Grace Davis (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) forced the extra session with her second goal of the season at the 65:51 mark of the contest. Davis sent home a rebound directly in front of the cage after sophomore Amy Misera's (Hunt Valley, Md./Brewster Academy) initial attempt was thwarted by Massengill.
Both teams were held scoreless until the 51st minute as Chick pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage and slipped it past Engineers' sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass./Oxford) for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Wheaton outshot WPI, 19-9, in the game and held a 21-10 advantage in penalty corners. Massengill and Puishys matched each other with eight saves apice, while WPI starting goalkeeper Liz Dufresne (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) had two stops in 35 minutes of action.
Lyons' freshman back Holly Norberg (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) nearly potted the game-winner in the 74th minute, but her successful penalty stroke attempt was eventually waved off due to an illegal shooting motion.
Wheaton (5-11, 1-6 NEWMAC) returns to play on Tuesday, October 29 against Bridgewater State University on the road at 7 p.m. WPI (6-9, 1-6 NEWMAC) travels to Fitchburg State on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at 5 p.m. With the win, the Lyons inched closer to evening the all-time series (18-20-0) against WPI dating back to 1979.
