Box Score Massengill stops a game-high four shots in defeat
NORTON, Mass. – Babson College senior Julia Pochini (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) and junior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) each netted two goals as the Beavers defeated the Wheaton College field hockey team, 5-0, on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
With the win, Babson improves to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while Wheaton falls to 4-11 and 0-6.
Malone's first strike came at the end of the first half off a penalty corner as she rifled a shot into the Wheaton cage following a pass from freshman Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass./Pentucket Regional) at 35:00.
Pochini registered her first goal ten minutes into the second half with a shot into the lower left corner of the cage after corralling a pass from sophomore Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional), which pushed the visitors ahead, 2-0.
Babson senior Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) extended the visitors lead six minutes after Holmes's strike at 51:54 before Malone and Pochini each added an additional tally at 64:53 and 68:58.
The Beavers finished the contest with 17 shots and 12 penalty corners, while Wheaton recorded four shots, three in the second half and five corners.
Wheaton senior co-captains Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) combined for three shots. Freshman Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) also registered one shot in the loss.
The Lyons compiled six saves with four coming from senior Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and two by junior Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable). Babson senior goalkeeper Kayla Florence (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) turned away two shots to push her record to 9-6 on the season.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 26, as Wheaton hosts WPI at 1 p.m. and Babson entertains Gordon College for a non-conference tilt at noon.
