Box Score Lyons post eighth shutout of the season
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team scored 58-seconds into its contest against Mount Holyoke College and never looked back en route to a 2-0 victory on the road in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
Junior Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) wasted little time putting Wheaton ahead by a 1-0 margin tucking a shot into the right corner of the net with less than a minute expired on the clock for her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Kaitlin Montoya (Placentia, Calif./Orange Lutheran) was credited with an assist on the tally.
Despite outshooting the hosts 14-1 in the first stanza, Wheaton was held scoreless until the 69th minute as junior Kelsee Howes (Maynard, Mass./Maynard) buried an insurance goal on a feed from sophomore Julie Beyar (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) past Mount Holyoke freshman goalkeeper Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont./Cawthra Park Secondary School).
Wheaton finished the contest with a 27-2 edge in shots and a 12-1 differential in corners. Marshall registered a game-high 11 saves, while Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) did not face a shot on goal in 90 minutes of play due to the Lyons stifling defense.
With the win, Wheaton improves to 23-13-2 in the all-time series dating back to 1980. Wheaton (10-5-1, 5-1-0 NEWMAC) returns to the pitch on Tuesday, October 22 when it travels to Coast Guard Academy for a NEWMAC matchup at 7 p.m. Mount Holyoke (5-10-0, 0-7-0) visits Springfield on next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
