Box Score NORTON, Mass.- Following a wild second half that saw a combined seven goals scored on Tuesday, the nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team began its four-game homestand on a high note, as the Lyons produced a 5-4 overtime win over previously unbeaten University of Massachusetts at Boston in non-league action at Mirrione Stadium.
Ranked 16th in the country and tied for third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton improves to 7-0-2. The Beacons are now 8-1.
Senior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central), who finished with a game-best six points, picked up the winner in the 95th minute. Receiving the pass from classmate Kierstin Luber (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) at the same time Beacon sophomore goalie Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass./Archbishop Williams) dove to cover the ball, Muse managed to knock the ball loose and tap her shot into the back of the net.
Coming into today's game, the Lyons had surrendered just four goals all season, while UMass-Boston had only given up six. Sophomore Gabriella Verde (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) contributed a goal and two assists in the win, as she and Muse connected on Wheaton's first and third markers.
Four different Beacons tallied, including sophomore leading scorer Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass./West Bridgewater), who finished with a goal and a helper.
After a relatively tame first half that saw the Lyons take a 1-0 edge on Verde's 17th-minute goal, the teams combined to score seven times in less than a 23-minute span after the halftime break.
Freshman Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) gave Wheaton a 2-0 lead just 1:23 into the frame before sophomore Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) cut the Beacon deficit in half just 40 seconds later.
After UMass-Boston knotted the score at 50:10, Verde fed Muse on a quick restart at 53:42 and sophomore Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) on a cross at 67:32 that gave Wheaton its second two-goal advantage of the game.
However, the Beacons battled back yet again, as junior Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) scored just 23 seconds after Corigliano to make the score 3-2 at 67:55. A minute and 15 ticks later, Ledin tallied the equalizer.
Freshman goalie Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) stopped three shots in regulation, while classmate Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) entered the game in overtime and picked up the win. Spain finished with nine saves for the visitors.
Wheaton remains out of league on Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. game against Simmons College.
