Wheaton scores three straight to turn back host Worcester State, 3-1

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass.- Three freshmen had a hand in each of the Wheaton College women's soccer team's three goals on Sunday afternoon, as the Lyons overcame an early deficit in knocking off host Worcester State University by a 3-1 count in non-conference action.

Receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll, Wheaton remains at unbeaten at 1-0-1.  The Lyons also handed the Lancers their first loss of the season.  Last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament champion, Worcester State is now 1-1.

Freshman Allie Hinrichs (Swampscott, Mass./Waring School) led the Blue and White with a goal and an assist, including feeding the tying marker 4:34 before the intermission.  Later in the contest, Hinrichs provided Wheaton with an insurance goal, finishing classmate Cat Amick's (Vashon, Wash./Vashon Island) corner kick at 71:37.

After surrendering a breakaway goal 1:48 into play, the Lyons settled down and eventually capitalized on their first-half scoring opportunities, as Wheaton held a 10-3 advantage in shots.  Senior Samantha Cronin (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) converted Hinrichs' feed from the left side of the field to knot the game at one.

A little over three minutes into the second stanza Wheaton took the lead for good, as junior Kristina Braga (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) led Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) on a breakaway attempt.  The first-year player took full advantage in scoring her first collegiate goal.  Wheaton held a 6-5 edge in shots during the second half while taking six of the frame's seven corners.

Wheaton had a pair of freshman goalies split time this afternoon, with Taylor Wilson (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) improving to 1-0-1 thanks to her shutout second half.  Classmate Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) started for the Lyons and made one stop while allowing the lone goal.

Wheaton welcomes non-league foe Salve Regina University to Norton next Saturday for its home opener at 12:00 p.m.
