Lyons defeat Smith 20-5 to win ECAC Championship

NORTON, Mass. – Junior Amy Moreira (Bristol, R.I./Mount Hope) scored six goals and won five draw controls to propel the top-seeded Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a 20-5 win over No. 4 seed Smith in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Sunday afternoon at Keefe Field.

Senior Hailey Colburn (Concord, N.H./Concord) scored four goals and dished out three assists for the Lyons (14-6), who captured their first ECAC Championship in program history after a pair of trips to the semifinals in 2001 and 2002. Moreira, meanwhile, was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after compiling 10 points (8-2-10) and nine draw controls this weekend.

Ten different student-athletes tallied at least one point on the afternoon for Wheaton while four student athletes – senior Sydney Ferguson (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown), sophomores Leila Mills (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Charlotte DeSantis (Darien, Conn./Darien), and freshman Morgan Prudden (Andover, Mass./Proctor Academy) – each recorded multiple points. DeSantis and Ferguson each went off for a two goal and an assist while Prudden potted a pair of goals and Mills recorded a goal and two assists.

Senior Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) paced the Pioneers (10-9) with three points (2-1-3) while freshman Jessica Lilliquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) scored two goals. Sophomore Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) won a game-high eight draw controls and also caused two turnovers.

Wheaton outshot the Pioneers 34-19 on the afternoon and led 10-2 at halftime behind four goals from Moreira and two from Colburn. The Lyons scored the first seven goals of the second half – including DeSantis' 50th of the season – to build a commanding 17-2 lead. Smith received five yellow cards on the afternoon which led to a pair of up goals for the Lyons – one by Moreira in the first half and another by Colburn midway through the second stanza.

Sophomore Devon Soucier (Avon, Conn./Northwest Catholic) collected a team-high four ground balls for Wheaton while Colburn and Ferguson chipped in with three draw controls each. Freshman Katy Ananian (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) made nine saves to earn the win for Wheaton. Junior Alina Pechacek (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) recorded three saves for Smith.

Colburn finishes her distinguished career at Wheaton No. 1 in assists (85) and No. 3 in both goals (199) and points (284) in program history. Named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year earlier this season, Colburn established a new single-season record for assists (41) and points (127) in 2012, while her 86 goals is the second-highest single-season total in school history.
